Arundel & South Downs CLP members have pledged support for Purna Sen in her aim to win back Brighton Pavilion for Labour at the next General Election. Recent polls show that it is likely be a close call, but one that is both winnable and vital to seeing a Labour resurgence in the town and on the South Coast. Labour had three MP's in the constituencies of Brighton & Hove between 1997 and 2010, a period that coincided with a renaissance of investment in infrastructure and culture in the City.
Arundel & South Downs CLP members have been campaigning alongside Brighton Pavilion CLP members in recent weeks, and the response on the streets is positive. With the Green Party currently unpopular with many residents following what is seen as a mishandling of the refuse workers dispute resulting in rubbish being left uncollected for up to six weeks, as well as the imposing of unwelcome parking charges and restrictions, residents are keen to see change.
Arundel & South Downs CLP chair Chris Wood commented, "We are seeing very positive signs from residents on the doorsteps of Brighton & Hove. The recent Ashcroft Poll in Pavilion shows that with Labour currently polling 33%, the Greens on 32% and the Tories way behind on 18%, the choice is certain to be between two parties. The only way for voters to affect change in Brighton Pavilion is to vote Labour. Our members can make a real difference in getting the message across to residents in Brighton Pavilion, and we encourage them to join us at the regular campaign days."
